“Should orders and the law ever conflict, our officers must obey the law.”

This quote comes from a plaque posted at West Point, reminding the men and women of our Armed Forces that America’s soldiers don’t “just follow orders;" they follow the Constitution.

The Secretary of Defense clearly didn’t get the memo. Instead, he's threatening servicemembers who defy illegal orders with a court martial.

I spent 20 years serving on Navy combatant ships, John. In those 20 years, I never saw anything like this — a politician demanding the U.S. military bend to his whims, insulting our generals, threatening veterans on social media, endangering American lives with his sloppy conduct. It’s unthinkable.

I take these threats very seriously, and that's why I'll do everything in my power to defend the rights of our Armed Forces, just as they defend ours.
