John,
The Senate is expected to vote this coming Wednesday or Thursday on extending the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies, which have been keeping health care more affordable for 20 million people. Open enrollment for January 1 ACA-sponsored health insurance closes 5 days later. This gives Congress very little time to act to extend the ACA premium tax credits in time for next year.
Time is of the essence, and we’re doing everything we can to put pressure on Congress to do what is right and extend the subsidies so that people won’t have to choose between paying for essential needs or their health insurance.
We have sent hundreds of thousands of messages to Congress,1 collected hundreds of stories from people who will be directly impacted by skyrocketing health care costs,2 and used those stories to demand Congress act.3
This work is urgent. If we don’t succeed, millions of people will lose their health insurance and millions more will be forced to pay outrageous out-of-pocket premiums. All of our efforts are made possible by supporters like you.

Earlier this week, we held a webinar with some of our partners to discuss ways we can continue fighting to extend the premium tax credits. We talked about how Republicans in Congress and the White House are floating a variety of proposals, all of which would make things worse than if they just enacted a clean extension.
One of the plans floating around is to have Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) replace the premium tax credits. HSAs are used to pay for qualifying medical expenses; they cannot be used to cover health insurance premiums, so they don’t provide the help that 90% of people enrolled receive through the premium tax credits that are about to expire.4 If you can’t afford to pay for an increased health insurance premium, no HSA is going to meet your medical needs.
The only logical and effective way to lower health insurance costs quickly is to extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act premium tax credits in their current form. We’re keeping up the pressure to get this clean extension passed, and you are an important part of that effort.
