Warren for Senate: [link removed]
Since I
sent you my last note about the dangers of mega-media mergers three weeks
ago, we got a new development today:
Netflix won the bidding war to buy Warner Brothers — including its film
and TV studios, HBO, and HBO Max — in what looks like an anti-monopoly
nightmare.
This merger would create one massive media giant with control of almost
half of the subscriber streaming market — owning movies and shows like:
White Lotus,
Love is Blind,
Stranger Things,
Succession,
Squid Games,
The Sopranos,
Wednesday,
Euphoria,
Game of Thrones,
The Big Bang Theory,
The DC Universe,
Lord of the Rings,
Harry Potter,
The Last of Us,
Sex and the City,
Every Turner Classic Movie,
Bridgerton,
The Circle,
The Wire,
Veep,
Curb Your Enthusiasm,
The Crown,
Narcos
…and so much more.
This could force Americans into higher subscription prices and fewer
choices over what and how they watch, while putting American workers at
risk.
But this fight is far from over.
It’s obvious by now that, under Donald Trump, the antitrust review process
has become a cesspool of political favoritism and corruption. But the
Justice Department must enforce our nation’s anti-monopoly laws fairly and
transparently — not use the Warner Bros. deal review to invite
influence-peddling and bribery.
[ [link removed] ]The consolidation of our media landscape is bad for the consumer and
for our democracy. I’m going to keep fighting to make sure our antitrust
laws are properly enforced so you don’t have to pay an arm and a leg to
watch your favorite movie or show. If you’re able, chip in to fuel our
fight to take on this kind of monopolization running rampant under Donald
Trump.
