A Victory in the Fight Against Childhood Cancer

This week marked a huge victory in the fight against childhood cancer. On Monday, the House passed my Mikaela Naylon Give Kids A Chance Act, a landmark bill to accelerate pediatric cancer treatments and expand access to life-saving therapies for children battling rare diseases.

The bill was named in honor of a beautiful young woman I met at my childhood cancer summit in September. Even at the height of her struggle with cancer, Mikaela traveled to Capitol Hill to advocate for this crucial legislation. She wanted her presence and her voice to make a difference.

Heartbreakingly, she passed away just a few weeks later. But in her final moments, I reached out to her and told her that her story wouldn't be forgotten — that her impact would outlive us all.

Mikaela represents all the children who have suffered from this disease. Losing some of them has been the hardest part of my career, but this week, I’m encouraged because I know Mikaela’s legacy — and all of their legacies — will live on in this bill and help save countless lives.

I founded the Childhood Cancer Caucus 16 years ago because I noticed that children with cancer didn’t have a voice here in Washington. We cared about adult treatments, but no one was paying attention to the precious children battling this heartbreaking disease.

Since then, we’ve made a change for the better — and this bill is proof.

Specifically, the bill will do several things:

  1. Expand combination drug therapy options for kids, giving them access to the same treatments as adults.
  2. Reauthorize my Creating Hope Act, which created a Pediatric Priority Review Voucher Program within the FDA — the first-ever market incentive for pharmaceutical companies to develop cancer treatments for children. It was this voucher system that enabled Dr. Allison from MD Anderson to obtain FDA approval for a breakthrough treatment called CAR-T immunotherapy.
  3. Establish an FDA office in an Abraham Accords nation — strengthening President Trump's Abraham Accords, boosting our medical research with trusted nations, and reducing our reliance on the CCP for critical medical supplies.

With 313 cosponsors, the Mikaela Naylon Give Kids A Chance Act was one of the most bipartisan bills in Congress, proving there's nothing more important than saving children's lives.

I joined KXAN News to discuss the impacts of the bill. The full interview — including our discussion on the Trump administration's latest foreign policy moves — will air at 8:30am CT this Sunday on KXAN's State of Texas.

Russia's Abduction of Ukrainian Children: Evil in Its Purest Form

This week, I was honored to speak at a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing on the Russian Federation's abduction of at least 20,000 Ukrainian children.

Many of these children have been shipped to Russia, tortured, told their own country and families are "the enemy," and finally, sent to the frontlines of the war to fight against their homeland. No child should ever have to endure that kind of barbarism.

The Russian Federation is also indoctrinating and militarizing Ukrainian children in the territories Russia has occupied in Eastern Ukraine. According to some reports, 43,000 children are already enrolled in Russia's paramilitary youth program, with one million others vulnerable to brainwashing and abuse in the occupied territories.

This is an issue I've been following since the start of Putin's war, and I'm grateful to those who are calling attention to it, including First Lady Melania Trump, whose compassionate advocacy has already helped several children return home.

We must hold those responsible accountable and ensure this ends — not only for Ukraine’s sake, but for our own. Russia’s attempt to re-engineer an entire generation is a battle plan. They are preparing children for war with NATO.

As I said at the hearing, the repatriation of these children is a national security imperative — and beyond that, it’s a moral imperative. This is a time for moral clarity, and history will judge us by how we respond.
