*Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has launched her annual holiday consumer protection campaign focused on ways Michigan residents can protect their information and their wallets. The Department of Attorney General will issue press releases each Monday outlining the scams of the week, with daily posts shared through the Michigan Consumer Protection social media accounts [ [link removed] ].

*AG Nessel Releases Latest Elder Abuse Task Force Newsletter [ [link removed] ]
*Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has released the latest edition of the Elder Abuse Task Force newsletter [ [link removed] ], highlighting significant progress in efforts to protect Michigan’s older adults. The issue features resources for residents and an update on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ (MDHHS) Adult Protective Services program.

*Michigan's Scanner Law [ [link removed] ]
*The Shopping Reform and Modernization Act (“Scanner Law”) (PDF) [ [link removed](S(vxj0henrzzjrfqxk31tos4n2))/documents/mcl/pdf/mcl-Act-15-of-2011.pdf ], became effective September 1, 2011. The Scanner Law allows prices to be displayed on shelf signs or by other methods that are clearly visible to consumers at the place where the item is located.

*Using AI technology, scammers can collect audio data, maybe from your latest Instagram post, to clone your voice. The imposter will then call, possibly spoofing the number of a loved one on your caller ID. They may claim to be in serious trouble and beg the relative to send money.

*These fake websites are designed to look like websites for real colleges. The goal of these sites is to trick prospective students into sending money or sharing personal information.  

*Computer Ransomware [ [link removed] ]
*Ransomware is a type of malware used to infect computers, mobile devices, and networks. It encrypts or restricts access to data until a sum of money is paid. 

*Sweepstakes - "You May Already Be a Winner!" [ [link removed] ]
*Sweepstakes are advertisements that many people find irresistible...and very costly. It is important to keep in mind that companies that use sweepstakes are not in business to give away prizes. They are in business to sell merchandise. Sweepstakes are simply a way to attract your attention to their products or services.

*Auto Extended Warranties [ [link removed] ]
*Extended warranties are service contracts that promise to pay for repairs—and they do so at an extra cost. They are usually offered by auto dealerships or third parties—and instead of warranting a product or extending the time on an original manufacturer’s warranty, they agree to pay for only designated repairs. 

*Unemployment Scam [ [link removed] ]
*As Michiganders face challenges applying for and obtaining unemployment benefits, some are turning to social media seeking help or answers to questions. Offers to assist claimants with the benefit process may be scams, and the answers provided to unemployment-related questions on social media may contain misinformation that encourages claimants to commit fraud.
