Statement: NDIS plans will be computer-generated, with human involvement dramatically cut under sweeping overhaul

A leaked internal NDIA staff briefing has exposed major changes to how NDIS plans are created. Staff who attended that briefing were concerned enough about what they heard that they shared the details with the media.

Every Australian Counts is calling on the Government to explain these changes clearly and openly, and to deliver open, transparent co-design before anything is introduced

People with disability must be assured that there will be strong safeguards, real human oversight and a genuine right to appeal. People need decisions made by humans who understand our lives and who can be held accountable when things go wrong.

Psychosocial disability and the NDIS: Have your say

Every Australian Counts is running a short survey for people with psychosocial disability. We want to know how the NDIS is working for you, what difference it has made in your life, and what needs to change.

  • The survey takes 5-10 minutes

  • Answers are anonymous unless you choose to share your details

Your feedback will help us show what’s working and what’s not.

Article: Support Needs Assessments – More Questions Than Answers

The NDIA plans to introduce new Support Needs Assessments from mid-2026. One tool being considered is the I-CAN assessment. However, many important details have not been made public.

Concerns raised include:

  • No public co-design process with people with disability or professionals

  • No open trial or independent review

  • Limited information about who will carry out the assessments

  • Unclear use of impairment categories

  • Unclear how algorithm-based decisions will be made and reviewed

  • Lack of options for people with complex needs

  • Risk of harm if the process is not trauma-informed
