Congressman Al Green and Senator Raphael Warnock Introduce Bicameral Resolution Honoring Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.  

(Washington, D.C)— Today, Congressman Al Green (TX-09) and Senator Raphael Warnock (GA), both proud members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., introduced a bicameral resolution honoring the nation’s first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American men. Founded 119 years ago on this day, Alpha Phi Alpha has built a legacy of leadership, scholarship, and service that continues to shape communities across the nation.

Since its founding at Cornell University in 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha has produced generations of influential leaders whose contributions span public service, the arts, academia, law, and civil rights. Distinguished members include Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Justice Thurgood Marshall, W.E.B. Du Bois, Andrew Young, and many others who have shaped the nation’s pursuit of justice and equality. This resolution is cosponsored by seven additional Members of Congress who are also proud Members of the Fraternity: Rep. Robert C. “Bobby” Scott (VA-3), Rep. Danny K. Davis (IL-7), Rep. Gregory W. Meeks (NY-5), Rep. David Scott (GA-13), Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (MO-5), Rep. Steven Horsford (NV-4), and Rep. Gabe Amo (RI-1).

 “Alpha Phi Alpha’s enduring commitment to service, justice, and community development has transformed lives for more than a century,” said Congressman Green. “As brothers of this historic fraternity, Senator Warnock and I are honored to recognize its founding, celebrate its legacy, and reaffirm our confidence that Alpha men will continue to lead, advocate, and inspire future generations.”

“Becoming an Alpha man helped teach me the importance of unyielding passion, fiery ambition, and the importance of service in all that you do,” said Senator Warnock, a fall 1993 initiate of the Alpha Gamma Lambda Chapter in Harlem. “So as we take stock of all that the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc has poured into us on this Founders’ Day, we must also continue striving forward and helping spread the creed all Alpha men live by: to live out our high aims of Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love for all Mankind as you lead with a servant’s heart in your communities, marching ever onward and upward. Happy Founders’ Day.” 

The resolution recognizes the fraternity’s historic achievements and its ongoing efforts to promote civic engagement, youth empowerment, and equity for all communities.
