Tomorrow marks four years since Teachers Unify to End Gun Violence was founded by three teachers — Abbey Clements, Sarah Lerner, and Sari Beth Rosenberg — who felt the fear in our nation’s teachers and schools and decided enough is enough.
In the wake of too many school shootings and far too much inaction from our leaders, educators were being left to manage the crisis alone. We realized that Teachers Unify would act as an unfortunate but necessary gap-filler.
Where the system offered only "thoughts and prayers," teachers need actual prevention strategies, support, and empowerment. The system has failed to protect our classrooms, so we decided to build the protection ourselves.
Tomorrow, we celebrate four years of stepping in. We wish this work weren’t necessary, but until our leaders do their jobs, we will continue to do ours.
Teachers Unify is a grassroots movement of educators across America whose mission is to empower its constituents and supporters to demand that communities are safe from gun violence.
