Property Taxes on the Rise: What You Deserve to Know
________________________________________________________________________
Friends,
Many of you have tuned into the local news and uncovered some unwelcome news: next year’s property taxes are going up once more. According to the Minnesota Department of Revenue, property taxes statewide are expected to jump by nearly $1 billion next year. Families are already dealing with high inflation, housing costs, and rising insurance rates. Now, many homeowners could be asked to pay hundreds more just to stay in their homes.
There has been some debate about what is driving these increases. But from where I sit at the Capitol, the answer is clear: decisions made by Governor Walz and the Democrat majority over the past years are pushing costs down to our local governments. When the state burns through a historic $18 billion surplus, raises taxes by another $10 billion, and adds costly mandates on cities, counties, and schools, somebody ends up footing the bill. Unfortunately, that somebody appears to be you.
Even though property taxes are set locally, state policy has a direct impact on local budgets. Mandates passed in St. Paul add real expenses that communities must cover if they want to keep classrooms open, maintain roads, support first responders, and deliver basic services. Local leaders are facing tough decisions, and homeowners are seeing the result on their tax statements.
Some people may wonder why, now that Republicans make up exactly half of the Minnesota House, we are still sounding the alarm about harmful policies pushed by Democrats. The reality is that these issues did not begin this year. They are the direct result of decisions made when Democrats controlled the House, Senate, and Governor’s office. At that time, all Republicans could do was warn about the consequences and fight to hold the line. Many Minnesotans saw what was happening, and to their credit, they voted for balance. Because of that, Republicans were able to stop additional costly mandates this year and finally pass long-overdue anti-fraud measures to better protect your tax dollars. Democrats in the House still opposed major accountability reforms like establishing an Independent Office of Inspector General, choosing instead to let the same fraud-riddled agencies police themselves.
As we move forward, we need to ensure that state government lives within its means. That means only passing legislation Minnesotans can truly afford. The Paid Family and Medical Leave program is a clear example of what can go wrong. It was structured in a way that will bury small businesses under costly administrative burdens [ [link removed] ], while major corporations, the very ones Democrats claim to oppose, are best positioned to absorb those costs. At a time when family-owned businesses are already struggling to keep their doors open, we cannot continue forcing policies onto them that jeopardize jobs and limit economic opportunity.
We also need to stop passing unfunded mandates onto schools and local governments. And we must aggressively address Minnesota’s fraud epidemic, which has siphoned billions of taxpayer dollars away from the very services that are supposed to be supported. If we can stop the systemic loss of public funds and rein in unnecessary spending, we can finally put an end to the constant tax increases that strain families without actually improving any services for Minnesotans.
Minnesotans deserve a government that respects your hard work and protects your ability to stay in your home and community. I will continue fighting for affordability, accountability, and common-sense priorities at the Capitol. If you have questions about your property tax notice or want to share how these increases will affect your family, please reach out anytime. Hearing from you helps me advocate more effectively on your behalf.
Thank you for the honor of representing you.
Have a great weekend,
Josh
