BREAKING, John:
Today, Justice Democrats is proud to announce our sixth 2026 Democratic primary endorsement: Melat Kiros in Colorado’s 1st congressional district!
Melat is the daughter of Ethiopian immigrants who built a life in Denver through hard work and community. When she witnessed the Tigray genocide in Ethiopia in 2020-2022, she spoke up against it. And then when she saw the genocide happening in Gaza, she defended pro-Palestinian protesters — even though it cost her her job at her law firm.
That’s the kind of urgency and moral clarity we need in Congress: principled fighters who won’t back down when lives are on the line, not more Representatives who will fold for a corporate PAC check.
Melat’s parents supported their family from the ground up by working two and three jobs while neighbors and chosen family helped raise Melat and her sister. That’s how she learned what community really means: no one gets left behind.
Today, too many people are being left behind by those in Washington, like CO-01 incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette. DeGette has been in office since the year Melat was born. Rent is crushing, childcare costs more than a second mortgage, and you can lose everything because you get sick—even if you have insurance. Meanwhile, Congress is bought and paid for by the same corporations driving up prices.
Melat represents a generation that did what everyone said they should: earned degrees, worked hard, followed the rules, and still aren’t able to afford a home or healthcare. As a renter, a barista, and a PhD student, she knows firsthand what it means to live the struggle that career politicians only talk about.
Melat is running for Congress to put working people at the center of every decision and to deliver three basic guarantees: Medicare for All, Housing First, and Universal Childcare.
We can’t deliver these key necessities to working-class people in Denver and the rest of the country until we get corporate money out of politics, and that means replacing corporate-backed Democrats like DeGette with a new generation of leadership.
But like other Justice Democrats, Melat can’t defeat an entrenched, complacent incumbent without support from our people-powered movement.
In solidarity,
Alexandra Rojas
