friend– debt cancellation is powerful.
Research shows it could mean 7 million people gaining access to safe drinking water, 5 million more children attending school, and over 59,000 children and mothers’ lives being saved.
But instead, in 54 countries trapped by unfair debts, governments are being forced to choose between these essential services and repaying wealthy lenders.
Rich banks, hedge funds and oil traders are lining their coffers. While, from Angola to Zambia, millions are being robbed of healthcare and an education. That has to change. And with a new debt justice law, it could.
This week, the Big Give Christmas Challenge is doubling your donations. Meaning whatever you give, we’ll receive double that amount. So we can work twice as hard taking our demand for debt cancellation to the next level in 2026. Could you chip in today ([link removed]) ?

We know that a debt justice law here in the UK would make a huge difference because a massive 90% of the debts owed to big finance by lower-income countries in debt crisis, are overseen by UK law. Our government has it within its power to force private lenders to cancel unfair debts.
Like the debts of South Sudan – one of the poorest countries in the world, devastated by conflict and the climate crisis. Right now, South Sudan is being sued for unpaid debts. By an oil trader that, last year, made nearly $300 million in profit.
If successful, the case would force South Sudan to prioritise debt payments to its wealthy creditor above the most basic needs of its people. At a time when 69% of the population are in need of humanitarian assistance, millions of people could be forced deeper into poverty.
The injustice is frankly gobsmacking, friend. And a stark reminder of how important a debt justice law is. That way, we can stop unscrupulous lenders using UK courts to sue lower-income countries in crisis – and force them to cancel unfair debts instead! Freeing up vital funds so that governments can support their people, invest in education and healthcare, and tackle the climate crisis.
friend, when you donate today ([link removed]) you can turn £10 into £20, £20 into £40, or £40 into £80 and turbo charge our campaigning in 2026. Let’s win justice for people in countries like South Sudan!

Thanks to the support of people like you we’ve already made huge strides towards making a debt justice law a reality. We’ve got the government to commit to “tackling unsustainable debt” in lower-income countries, brought a bill to parliament, and worked with campaigners across the globe to build the biggest global debt movement in a generation this Jubilee Year.
Now let’s build on that momentum and push the campaign towards the finish line. friend, I know that a world where people’s basic needs come before the profits of rich banks is possible. Together we have the power to make it happen.
In solidarity,
Heidi
Debt Justice director
