Last year, Virginia identified a critical challenge: English Learner students were falling behind in foundational literacy. The gap between these students and their peers seemed insurmountable.
So we did what we do best. We brought people together.

Through the Virginia English Learner Network, 30 schools across 17 districts worked with national experts, analyzed their data, and developed practical strategies to improve literacy instruction.
The results:
Students in participating schools saw a 4-percentage-point improvement in reading scores compared to 0.3% in non-participating schools. High school English Learners saw an 18-point improvement.
That’s students reading more confidently. That’s teachers with tools that work. That’s families seeing progress they didn’t think was possible.
And it happened because donors invested in bringing the right people together with the right resources at the right time.
