Friends,
Today I filed a War Powers Resolution to block the use of U.S. forces in hostilities against or within Venezuela unless authorized by Congress.
I’ve been pressing the administration for weeks on illegal war activity they’re waging in the Caribbean and Pacific — strikes against boats they believe to be part of a drug trade, with limited evidence about whether that is in fact the case. More than 20 boats have been attacked, and more than 80 people have been killed.
Now, with looming threats of land strikes in Venezuela, Trump is trying to start a new, pointless forever war, and I’m doing all I can to stop him.
The American people do NOT want more forever wars, decided in secret and waged without the congressional debate and authorization the Constitution requires.
The framers of the Constitution were very clear, and they believed very strongly that no president — not even George Washington! — should be able to go to war without a vote of Congress. Unauthorized military action against Venezuela would be a colossal and costly mistake that needlessly puts servicemembers’ lives at risk.
If you agree that any war must be debated and voted on by Congress, please add your name today to support my resolution.
Thank you for speaking up with me. I’ll share updates as we learn more.
