The time we feared would come has arrived – the Trump administration has engaged an attack on our Somali neighbors. Reports of masked ICE agents abducting members of our community have been made.
Earlier today, I joined my Minneapolis colleagues in a statement on the targeted attacks. You can find that statement here.
We know that the accusations Donald Trump has made of our neighbors have no basis in fact. Once again, he is utilizing fear tactics to attempt to turn us against one another to distract from the massive economic and moral failures he is responsible for. I stand with our state’s Somali community, and I emphatically reject the disgusting and disingenuous attacks hurled at them by Donald Trump and his far-right racist cronies. We will not cave, bend, or flinch as the President tries to demonize and terrorize our immigrant neighbors.
To our Somali neighbors: we stand with you. We cannot, and do not want to, imagine a Minneapolis without you. We will do everything we can to protect each other from this hostile federal government, despite their intent on dividing us.
As ICE ramps up their efforts in Minnesota by targeting our Somali and East African neighbors, it is critical to know your rights and know that you are not alone. I encourage everyone to review this ACLU guide on immigrants’ rights and what to do if ICE shows up at your workplace. We are all safer when armored with this knowledge. If you witness someone being kidnapped by ICE, one of the most helpful things you can do is asking the person’s name. This can help to notify their families so they can get connected to legal services faster.
