Dearest Friends,

In the early days of 5 Gyres, before any real programs, parties, and PHA studies, there were people. People who believed in our first mission statement – to “transform society towards sustainability by researching how waste affects our planet and people, and show citizens, governments and corporations how to effect change” – and who wanted to be part of the solution. We had hundreds of passionate individuals, from scientists and activists to musicians and adventurers, who joined us as we sailed 50,000 nautical miles around the world.

From what I’ve been told, these expeditions were thrilling, eye-opening, silly, inspiring, and life-changing. The first expedition crew returned with a sobering realization – the oceans are far more polluted with microplastics than they had ever imagined, and even in the middle of “nowhere”, there was plastic. These early expeditions created a community of changemakers that became our first Ambassadors ([link removed]) .

This network has since grown and evolved to reach 2,000+ individuals around the globe, including sustainable business owners, innovators, students, influencers, teachers, parents, celebrities, brand representatives, and of course, our past expedition participants. We support our Ambassador Network through the Ambassador Action Fund ([link removed]) , monthly newsletters, quarterly calls, and constant love and appreciation! They are our “boots on the ground”, fellow changemakers, volunteers, and friends.
