Dear Friends,

In the United States — known for its First Amendment and symbolic commitment to freedom of expression — press freedom is in decline, particulary by Donald Trump’s return to power for a second term on 20 January 2025.

Donald Trump has always been quick to insult and threaten journalists and media professionals. Since his re-election, the U.S. president has turned years of hostility towards the press into targeted measures that limit its freedom: physical restrictions, verbal abuse, weaponisation of legal procedures, and the dismantling of public and independent media outlets.

The press in the U.S. operates under growing pressure, in a climate where independence itself has become an act of courage. The president’s attacks on the press are getting more organised, more intense, and increasingly institutional — mirroring authoritarian or semi-authoritarian regimes around the world.

And Trump is not the only threat. Press freedom in the U.S. is also undermined by other powerful predators, such as businessmen Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. All of these factors are creating an environment in which information is both manipulated and distorted.

When press freedom is violated in the world’s most influential democracy, journalists all over the world feel the impact. This is why your support matters now more than ever.

Your contribution allows us to continue protecting those who take risks every day to keep you informed — in the U.S. and around the world.

With gratitude,
