As we reflect this Giving Tuesday, a day dedicated to generosity and making a difference, it's crucial to reflect on the serious challenges facing evangelical churches today.
Merchants of misinformation are profiting by fanning the flames of fear and division among us. Political figures increasingly turn the law and government force against their opponents, leaving Christian leaders torn between being labeled “too liberal” or “too conservative.”
The reports we see from pastors are alarming: “Cynicism and defeatism . . . for most of my congregation, our current political climate seems too contentious and divisive to navigate, so there is a sense of withdrawal and hopelessness.” “I have an older, rural congregation with lots of people who have dug into their political identity as much as or more than their identity in Christ. They see these as compartmentalized, so the pastor isn’t supposed to talk about politics (which means political positions they disagree with). So it’s challenging being able to preach and teach on how Christ speaks to those issues.” “I know dozens of evangelical leaders that have stepped down from or been removed from their pastoral role because they chose not to promote or adhere to Christian Nationalism within their congregations. Those that remain in ministry positions are often feeling overwhelmed by the pressure to conform and desperate to find resources that equip them to disciple the people in their congregations and communities who have given themselves over to this beastly power.”
