John,
As a former refugee from Afghanistan, I know firsthand what it's like to brace for cold, brutal weather without heat, warm clothing, blankets, food, water and health care.
I also know how the International Rescue Committee's (IRC) support—made possible by your generosity—brings relief to parents who worry how their children will stay warm when it's already a struggle to keep them safe, healthy and fed.
That's why I'm asking you to make a Giving Tuesday donation to the IRC before this 5X match opportunity expires at midnight: https://go.rescue.org/e/937243/donate-eoy-fy26-5X-em/dkmy2/1555665562/h/ddz-FE_j1A_M6LQraIASfEkCOLQQ0c5o2AOzwMsBl-8
To me, home is so much more than four walls around you. It's a feeling of belonging and being cared for.
Maybe you noticed that feeling yourself while sharing a Thanksgiving meal last week, or maybe you are looking forward to going home for the holidays and reuniting with loved ones over the coming weeks.
The first time I walked into my new apartment in the U.S., in New Jersey, I was reminded that I was not alone. Even though it's so different from what I left in Afghanistan, I felt cared for because I knew my new place was made possible because compassionate people like you gave their generous support.
John, it means a lot to know there are people like you who care about refugees, and I am so thankful for you.
Leaving Afghanistan was harrowing. There was a moment I was stopped and searched—I was sure I would be killed. All I could do was pray to God. But I was eventually able to leave. I had just one bag and a change of clothes with me.
I didn't know what to expect when I arrived in the U.S., but the kindness of the IRC and others welcoming refugees really stood out to me.
What many people don't know is how crucial your generosity is—without the IRC's support, I would have struggled to get everything I needed to rebuild my life.
But support from people like you helped me build a new home from nothing.
I was amazed at that kindness and it's why I became so passionate about staying involved with the IRC.
I hope everyone with the means will support the IRC financially today—especially during times like right now, when there are immense needs around the world, and when your gift can make an even bigger difference.
Please make your most generous Giving Tuesday donation today, while it will go 5X as far to help people like me survive, recover and rebuild their lives: https://go.rescue.org/e/937243/donate-eoy-fy26-5X-em/dkmy2/1555665562/h/ddz-FE_j1A_M6LQraIASfEkCOLQQ0c5o2AOzwMsBl-8
