Hi John,

It’s been a monumental year for us in so many ways, and we’re reflecting back on all the moments and movement-builders in our network who give us hope. ([link removed])

One such leader is Council Member Julie Won, who began her journey with NAL as a participant in our 2021 Ready to Lead® program. Today, she represents New York City’s 26th Council District. When she was elected in 2021, she made history as the first immigrant, woman, Asian American, and mother to represent her district.

“New American Leaders has been extremely impactful for an immigrant like me,” she shared. “They gave me a place where I belonged and without them, I don't know if I really would have seen a path forward.”

Having immigrated to the United States from South Korea at 8 years old, Julie’s story is emblematic of the American dream and the power of immigrants when we choose to lead. Though she had spent several years working in the tech field, Julie realized she wanted to pivot and make a difference for her community.

Even with her demanding schedule, Council Member Won has remained deeply committed to uplifting fellow New Americans. She has served as a speaker at our annual campaign trainings and participated in Elected Site Visits for members of our Elected and Appointed Officials Network—an ongoing community that all NAL alumni can join once they’re in office.

Julie’s story is a powerful reminder of what New American leadership makes possible. She may have been the first in her district, but she was never going to be the last. Today, she stands alongside six other NAL alumni on the New York City Council.
Power our movement to build a more inclusive democracy ([link removed])

This Giving Tuesday isn’t just about celebrating trailblazers like Council Member Julie Won—it’s about making sure she’s not the last. ([link removed]) We don’t train leaders for one-time wins. We build a pipeline that endures.

Your gift of $25, $50, or $100 (or whatever you are able!), directly fuels the next wave of New American leaders. ([link removed]) It strengthens the movement that’s reshaping who gets to lead in this country. We know there are a lot of organizations out there worthy of your support, but our democracy is stronger with people like us at the helm. Invest in us. Invest in you. Invest in our future.

Thank you.

With gratitude and joy,

The New American Leaders Team
