Corporate media owners have demonstrated a pattern of caving to pressure from those in power. The Washington Post fired respected opinion editor Karen Attiah for speaking honestly about racism and violence. She used her platform to tell the truth — and lost her job for it.

On the other hand, Bari Weiss — founder of The Free Press, an organization that borrowed our name but none of our ethics — used her platform to spread lies and sow division … and got a powerful new job out of it. The uber-wealthy Ellison family acquired Paramount, parent company of CBS, and installed Weiss as editor-in-chief of the news outlet that was once home to Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite.

This is all part of a bigger crisis we’re tracking through our Media Capitulation Index, which exposes how media owners like Jeff Bezos, Nexstar and Sinclair are bending to Trump’s demands and silencing dissenting voices. Every day they cave a little more — and every day, Free Press fights back.
