The path to imprisonment
Zimbabwe experiences regular hyperinflation. It was recorded at a whopping 736% last year! Prices rise faster than people can earn, sometimes daily or even hourly. Essential goods like groceries, fuel, and medicines become completely unaffordable.
It’ll be no surprise that the majority of women in Zimbabwe are jailed for poverty-driven, non-violent crimes, such as theft. Prisons are overcrowded and are not designed for women prisoners and their infants held with them.
On their release, female prisoners face poverty, stigma, and rejection by families and communities, all compounded by the trauma of their recent imprisonment. Criminal records last for life, blocking job prospects and progression.
