Friend,
This World AIDS Day, for the first time, we have a real shot at ending AIDS as we know it.
For the past 25 years, 80 percent of people living with HIV who are on treatment have used more affordable medications that President Clinton and the Clinton Health Access Initiative helped negotiate.
And yet, for as many advances as we’ve made, last year there were still 1.3 million new cases of HIV. To make matters worse, with the recent wave of U.S.-led global funding cuts, that number could balloon to more than 6 million additional cases by 2029.
But at this year’s Clinton Global Initiative, partners came together once again to share solutions – including a groundbreaking new partnership to secure the life-changing HIV prevention shot Lenacapavir for only $40 in low- and middle-income countries. One shot offers six months of protection and the new agreement means bringing this easy-to-use treatment down to the same cost as current daily PrEP pills.
It’s a milestone that shows that even the most cutting-edge breakthroughs can be made available to more than just the fortunate few – and it was made possible by partners like the Clinton Health Access Initiative, Unitaid, Gilead, Wits RHI, and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories.
