Dear John,
We’re living through an extraordinary moment — one where our democracy, the environment, and our basic rights are under real threat.
And, these unprecedented times demand unprecedented action. That is why, for the first time in our organization’s history, Maine Conservation Voters Action Fund is endorsing a candidate in a gubernatorial primary.
Earlier today, we stood with supporters, partners, and community leaders at the University of Southern Maine to endorse Hannah Pingree for Governor of Maine.
Our endorsement of Hannah comes after careful deliberation and evaluation of the candidates running for governor. Four things made Hannah stand out:
* Hannah has the strongest record of putting the protection of the environment and climate action at the top of her priorities . She has years of proven leadership, experience, and an unwavering commitment to protecting the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the future our children deserve.
* Hannah has a demonstrated record of standing up to special interests - like the chemical industry and Big Oil - and winning results for Maine families.
* Hannah has championed cost-saving climate and clean energy solutions , like heat pumps, to put money back in the pockets of Maine families and businesses.
* Hannah has the guts, smarts, and the experience to stand up to the Trump administration and will fight for our climate, environment, and democracy.
While there are several strong candidates in the race, Hannah stands out as the leader Maine needs to meet this moment. Hannah is a fighter who stands up for what’s right. During her years in the Legislature — including her service as Speaker of the House — she led on environmental health and took on the chemical industry and won, passing the Kid-Safe Products Act to remove toxic chemicals from children’s products. She advanced clean energy and conservation, and fought to protect working waterfronts. She has also been an outspoken advocate for affordable health care, abortion rights, and marriage equality.
Her leadership continued after leaving the Legislature. On North Haven, she led her school board and a local housing organization, bringing people together to build homes for island residents. As Director of Maine’s Office of Policy Innovation and the Future and co-chair of the Maine Climate Council, she helped Maine families reduce energy costs and expanded heat pump adoption. She strengthened Maine’s resilience to storms, and helped make the state’s climate action plan, Maine Won’t Wait, a national model.
Equitable climate action also requires fully recognizing tribal sovereignty—an essential step Hannah has committed to take early in her administration.
Through every role, Hannah has shown what Maine needs now: intelligence, collaboration, courage, and an unwavering commitment to the people and environment in Maine.
The challenges ahead — rising costs, more frequent and extreme climate shocks, and the return of failed leadership in Washington — require a governor who can lead with clarity, conviction, and strength. Hannah Pingree is that leader.
We’re proud to stand with her, and hope you will join us in voting for Hannah in the Democratic Primary on June 9th.
