Something I’m really proud of is that, in addition to being one of the first Muslim women in Congress, I’m also the first Somali-American to serve in Congress.
Over the last few decades, Somali refugees and immigrants have come to America to find safety and economic opportunity, just like generations of people throughout our history who have immigrated from all over the world to contribute to the great melting pot.
But over the last week, Trump and all of MAGA have put a target on the backs of Somali-Americans, and especially those in our community here in Minneapolis.
Trump has threatened to denaturalize legal Somali immigrants, threatened to launch sham green card investigations, declared that he will end Temporary Protected Status for Somalis, and spread dangerous misinformation about “Somali gangs terrorizing the people” and stealing billions of dollars.
This is not just an attack on Somali-Americans. This an attack on our entire Minneapolis community, and everyone who contributes to this great city.
Rather than explain why Trump doesn’t have the power to do what he threatens, or how his accusations have been debunked, I’m going to do something different: I want you to join me in taking action today.
CAIR is an organization that has fought tirelessly over the years to protect the civil rights of Muslim Americans and promote justice for all.
Here in Minnesota, CAIR is working to provide legal support to Somali families facing harassment, discrimination and threats, host Know Your Rights workshops, coordinate safety responses for vulnerable institutions and community spaces, monitor online threats and misinformation campaigns, and much more.
So, if you want to show that you stand with immigrant communities against racist and bigoted attacks from Donald Trump and the far-right, I’m asking you to join me in supporting CAIR today.
