Make a referral or donation to CSA's 2025 Holiday Basket Program

This has been a difficult year for some union families, and just as they do every year, the Community Services Agency (CSA) is working to make the season a little easier.

Referrals and donations are currently open for the Community Services Agency's 2025 Holiday Basket Program. Make referrals by Friday, December 5, or contributions by Friday, December 12.

New White House policy could worsen Maryland nurse shortage

A new policy from the Department of Education removes nursing concentrations from their list of "professional" degrees that qualify for increased student loan relief. The proposal comes at a time when the Maryland Hospital Association says the state is currently in need of about 4,000 more nurse practitioners.

"This is an attack on the nursing profession," said National Nurses United in a statement. "Shutting down nurses' access to resources for education will only further contribute to forces driving nurses away from the bedside." Read more »

 

National Guard member attacked in DC is a CWA member

Last week, Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe and Army Spec. Sarah Beckstrom, two members of the West Virginia National Guard, were shot while deployed to Washington, DC.

Sgt. Wolfe, who is currently hospitalized from the attack, is a member of CWA Local 2222 in Martinsburg, WV. "We condemn this act of violence and are praying for their recovery," Local 2222 said in a statement.

 

UMD must deliver fair pay, support labor rights for graduate workers

"Abrupt changes to graduate worker pay and working conditions aren’t new," writes Max Werkheiser is a graduate research assistant in The Diamonback, "but from my union’s internal survey and informal conversations with hundreds of graduate workers across multiple departments, disruptions are hitting a high." Politico management violated key AI adoption safeguards, arbitrator finds

Last week, journalists at Politico unionized with the Washington-Baltimore News Guild won a landmark arbitration regarding the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in their newsroom. Around the Region

On On November 24, IBEW Local 26 together with Steamfitters Local 602 and Plumbers Local 5 helped sponsor and distribute 1,500 turkeys and ingredients for sides in Capitol Heights, MD. Spearheaded by State Senator Joanne Benson and hosted by The Greater 202 Coalition, the event included Prince George’s Councilmember Wanika Fisher and County Executive Aisha Braveboy. Kudos to Local 26, Local 602, Local 5, and all of our Affiliates giving back this season!
