As we approach the end of the year, we can’t stop thinking about another deadline: 338 days until Election Day.
That seems far away, but we have a lot of work to do to beat Citizens United.
We’ve already launched The Montana Plan, a brand-new legal approach built around an important Supreme Court precedent: states can stop giving their corporations any power at any time. That includes the power to spend money on politics.
By passing a ballot initiative in Montana to do exactly that, we create a blueprint for other states to make Citizens United irrelevant everywhere.
Our paperwork is filed with the state. The next step will be to launch a statewide canvassing campaign to collect enough signatures — 100,000 is our goal — to qualify for the ballot. This means hosting volunteer trainings, buying clipboards and water bottles, and connecting with Montanans, from Billings to Butte and beyond.
