PUBLIC NOTICE
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
A November 25th Texas Tribune article (titled “In school voucher rules, Texas lets families get more for pre-K but rejects additional reporting requirements”) reports that Texas has finalized the rules for its new private school voucher program. Notably, this means participating private schools can keep their existing discretionary admissions standards and may deny entry to students, even when those students qualify for state voucher funds. This raises renewed concerns about the resegregation of society, affordability, transparency, and the negative impact on public education systems across Texas.
For a deeper understanding, please review the article below from July 2017 titled “The Racist Origins of Private School Vouchers” from the Center for American Progress, examining the historical origins of private school vouchers and their longstanding ties to segregation (kudos to the CAP).
