John,

This month, voters made their voices heard at the ballot box and the message is clear: Americans are craving fairness in our democracy. Voters in California decisively approved the redistricting ballot measure in response to Texas’s power grab. In Virginia, voters elected Democracy Defenders up and down the ticket to establish a Democratic trifecta that will protect fundamental freedoms in the state. Pennsylvania voters retained all three pro-democracy justices — protecting the state supreme court’s independent, fair-minded majority.

We cannot overstate the importance of these gains, but we must be clear-eyed about how we got here in the first place and the fight ahead. Republicans, at the behest of Donald Trump, launched a gerrymandering scheme because they’re terrified of losing the House. And right now, these map manipulators are actively trying to raise millions to fund the next phase of the redistricting crisis they’ve foisted on the country — gearing up for redraws in states like Florida, New Hampshire, and others.

You can guarantee that the NDRC will be doing everything in our power to stop them. If you want to help fund our rapid-response efforts, please make a donation today. [[link removed]]

But we shouldn’t have to play a game of Whac-a-Mole, beating back redraws in state after state, to preserve a representative democracy. We need a permanent fix in federal law to make sure this crisis can never happen again. The Redistricting Reform Act would require every state to establish independent commissions to draw maps. Mid-decade redraws would be banned, and every state would be held to the same standards to achieve fair maps.

Here’s how we see it: To defend our democracy, we need a multi-pronged approach. And the NDRC is fighting on many fronts. In the short term, our teams are making investments to preserve our democracy through the 2026 midterms. In the long term, we’re working to pass legislation like the Redistricting Reform Act to ensure fairness for decades to come.

The intensity and severity of this fight are unprecedented, and the resources required to wage it are, too. This movement is powered by supporters like you, John. When you give, you’re not only helping us play tough defense in the short-term — you’re going on offense to put in the critical legwork that will preserve our democracy for the long haul. Can you make a donation to support this critical work? [[link removed]]

Thanks so much,

The NDRC Team
