John,

An attack on the crown jewel of the Civil Rights Movement is unfolding right now before the highest court in the land. This headline says it all:

“The Supreme Court is hearing a case that could weaken the Voting Rights Act — and upend the midterms” — Politico

The case, Louisiana v. Callais, can be traced back to the state’s 2022 congressional map, which denied Black voters equal opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice. African Americans made up one-third of the state of Louisiana, but the map included just one Black-opportunity district out of the state’s six. The map was challenged in court, for diluting the voting power of Black Louisianans, prompting the state to redraw its map to include two Black-opportunity districts.

On October 15, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments about whether the redrawn, fairer map violates the 14th and 15th Amendments — a question that could deem the Voting Rights Act itself unconstitutional.

It’s clear: We must be ready to respond when the Supreme Court decides the fate of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. And we have to be equipped with the resources to push back against the extreme attacks that will happen if the Supreme Court weakens this monumental protection — opening the floodgates for more redistricting chaos.

If the idea of the Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act and ripping fair representation away from millions of voters enrages you, here’s what you can do about it:

Rush a donation to the NDRC and help make sure the fair maps movement has the resources we need to keep fighting back against extreme, anti-democracy efforts to weaken our voting rights.

Thanks for your support,
