Folks, An attack on the crown jewel of the Civil Rights Movement is unfolding right now before the highest court in the land. This headline says it all: “The Supreme Court is hearing a case that could weaken the Voting Rights Act — and upend the midterms” — Politico The case, Louisiana v. Callais, can be traced back to the state’s 2022 congressional map, which denied Black voters equal opportunity to elect a candidate of their choice. African Americans made up one-third of the state of Louisiana, but the map included just one Black-opportunity district out of the state’s six. The map was challenged in court, for diluting the voting power of Black Louisianans, prompting the state to redraw its map to include two Black-opportunity districts. It’s clear: We must be ready to respond when the Supreme Court decides the fate of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. And we have to be equipped with the resources to push back against the extreme attacks that will happen if the Supreme Court weakens this monumental protection — opening the floodgates for more redistricting chaos.
