Never Forget Those Who Protect Our Freedom

A Tragic Loss on Thanksgiving Day

New Jersey Friends and Neighbors,

On Thanksgiving, while most of us gathered around dining tables, laughing with family & friends and piling our plates high, another family faced the kind of loss you never really plan for. Sarah Beckstrom, a proud member of the National Guard and someone who understood the true meaning of service, was ambushed and shot. She died on Thanksgiving Day with her father writing "My baby girl has passed to glory".

This isn’t about politics, and it’s not a party issue. The sacrifice Sarah made - like so many before her - transcends division. It reminds us that the women and men who put on the uniform, in peacetime or war, deserve our respect, our gratitude, and our honor. Their commitment to freedom is what allows the rest of us to enjoy moments of peace and togetherness, to celebrate freely and safely.

While we sat with our families, The Beckstrom family began the hardest task of all—planning Sarah's funeral. It’s easy to take much for granted, but let’s not forget what our peace costs. Let’s not forget Sarah, or the everyday heroes who stand watch so we can live in comfort. Their service isn’t a headline or a talking point, and it sure doesn’t get holidays off.

As we move past Thanksgiving and into the season of reflection, I hope we hold Sarah’s family—and all families like hers—in our hearts. Reach out to someone who serves, or has served, and let them know their sacrifice matters. Our gratitude may be small comfort, but it matters more than we think.

Never forget the brave. Never take peace for granted,
