John,
Social Security Works isn’t like other non-profits.
We are a lean operation that raises the bulk of our budget from small-dollar donations, solicited through emails like this one. We don’t have big, institutional funders with competing agendas. Instead we count on the support of our members, so we can stay laser-focused on protecting and expanding our Social Security system.
Next year could be make or break for our Social Security system. We saw during the government shutdown that Donald Trump’s instinct, when threatened, is to inflict harm on vulnerable communities. He filed lawsuits in order to not have to disburse SNAP food support payments to 42 million Americans. There’s a tremendous amount he could do to dismantle our Social Security system even further.
In 2020, the last time President Trump stared down a losing election, he unilaterally defunded Social Security, forcing the system to dip into its $2.7 trillion trust fund to keep payments going.
We need to be ready for whatever he throws at us―and we need to be able to fight back.
We’re able to fight as hard as we do for Social Security because of our members. Can you make a 2026 membership contribution today?
