Neghat
A message from Council Leader, Councillor Neghat Khan
This week we’re excited to announce that Nottingham is one of the potential host cities for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2035. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Nottingham’s sporting heritage on a global stage, celebrating football and community pride.
There’s lots of great things happening in Nottingham – Nottingham Forest welcomed European football to our city on Thursday, we have a festive Wollaton Winter Light Trail which started this week and a fantastic Christmas market right in the heart of the city. This is a wonderful reminder of how vibrant and magical our city feels at this time of year.
As a Council, we’re continuing to make real progress in our improvement journey and this week I was in Parliament with the Council’s Chief Executive to discuss how we keep this going with Baroness Sharon Taylor, Parliamentary Under-Secretary in Government. Finally, our proposal to Government on LGR is in – this is a significant milestone for us and I’ll continue to update you as things progress.

Nottingham potential host city for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035
The FA, Irish FA, Scottish FA and FA of Wales have officially submitted their joint bid for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035. The tournament would be the largest single-sport event ever staged in the UK, and the first FIFA World Cup hosted in the country since 1966.
The bid includes 22 proposed stadiums – 16 in England (including Nottingham’s City Ground), three in Wales, two in Scotland and one in Northern Ireland – across 16 host cities.
Built on the powerful vision of “All Together” – a rallying cry for women’s football and sport more broadly to empower worldwide – it represents a fantastic opportunity to showcase Nottingham’s sporting heritage on a global stage, celebrating football and community pride.

LGR proposals submitted for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire
Council House
On Thursday, we submitted our LGR proposal for the region – known currently as Bii.
The proposal responds to the government’s criteria, but also directly responds to feedback from our residents, partners and businesses, and creates a unique footprint that focusses service delivery of one unitary authority on an urban conurbation and a second unitary authority serving the more rural areas to better reflect how our people and businesses live and work and visit.

Green Heart
The popular city-centre space, which opened in September last year, topped the Landscape and Public Realm Project category at last night’s Architects’ Journal Architect Awards 2025 (27 November).
Judges had visited Nottingham two months ago for a site visit of the wider Broad Marsh area, which has undergone a major transformation in the past few years.
In handing out the award, they said the Green Heart ‘breathes Nottingham’, highlighting the ‘remarkably transformative effect of the landscape, which re-energises the city centre with a beautiful and biodiverse public space’.
