Dear Friends,
Independent journalism is a high-risk industry in many countries — but one state imprisons far more journalists than any other. In the eyes of the Chinese regime led by Xi Jinping, the media should be a state mouthpiece, and the courageous journalists who strive to report the facts face brutal repression.
In 2025, China ranked 178th out of 180 in the RSF World Press Freedom Index. At least 120 journalists and media workers are imprisoned in the country, making it the world’s largest jail for journalists.

Among them is Zhang Zhan, sentenced to four years in prison in 2020 after she bravely revealed early information about the COVID-19 outbreak. She was briefly released in May 2024, only to be re-arrested less than four months later for reporting on human rights issues and sentenced to four more years behind bars.
In November 2025, the Chinese regime tried to make her disappear — but mobilisation by civil society groups, including RSF, forced them to back down.
RSF has campaigned for years to expose the inhumane persecution she faces. During her detention, she went on a hunger strike that brought her close to death, was left handcuffed for days on end, and forcibly fed through a nasal tube.
Despite relentless persecution, Zhang Zhan continues her struggle for freedom.
Your donation to RSF helps support our work towards securing the release of jailed journalists like Zhang Zhan.
