This Thanksgiving week I’m reflecting on family, gratitude, and the small traditions that make this holiday meaningful. I’m so looking forward to spending time with my family, connecting in the kitchen and catching up.
And in the spirit of traditions, some of you may remember when my social media post sharing our Kaine Family Creamed Onions got some attention online a few years back. The internet had some thoughts. But that’s part of what I love about Thanksgiving: every family’s table looks a little different, their own unique traditions built up over years and generations. That’s part of what makes this holiday so meaningful. So this year, I thought I’d share the recipe that caused all the commotion – a Kaine family favorite that actually dates back to the 17th century: |
Kaine Family Creamed Onions Recipe Ingredients: - 2 bags pearl onions

3 Tbsp butter
- 3 Tbsp flour
- 1 ½ cups half and half
- Grated cheese
Directions: - Add pearl onions to boiling water for 2–3 minutes until easy to peel.
- Cool, peel, and boil again for 10–15 minutes in salted water.
- Make a white sauce by melting butter, stirring in flour, and slowly adding half and half. Salt to taste.
- Pour the sauce over the drained onions, top with grated cheese, and bake at 350°F for 20 minutes.

Serve and enjoy – makes 8–10 small servings.
