Ramon Cadena out of jail, for now, in Guatemala!

After 11 days of relentless campaigning led primarily by family members and human rights activists in Guatemala, Rights Action is pleased to let folks know that Ramon Cadena, widely respected jurist and human rights lawyer, is out of jail and now on ‘home arrest’.
Two of the four malicious criminal charges were dropped, two are still hanging over his head.

Moreover, two university students - Christopher Morales and Pedro Ros – were freed from jail after 22 days in prison and are also on home arrest. In total, 27 students from the San Carlos University of Guatemala, along with their legal advisor Ramon Cadena, remain maliciously criminalized as part of the “Toma USAC: Botín Político” case. All were criminalized in 2023 for peacefully protesting corruption at the highest level of the University administration.
Upon release, Ramon expressed gratitude for the support he received, and sadness and anger at the on-going detention of the well-known journalist Jose Rubén Zamora, and of Luis Pacheco and Héctor Chaclán, both former leaders of the 48 Cantones Indigenous leadership of Totonicapán. Moreover, Luis is the actual Guatemalan Deputy Minister of Sustainable Development.
“There is nothing else to do but to keep on struggling”, said Ramon.
Jose Ruben Zamora Enemy Number One
In 2023, Hector Silva wrote (reproduced by Rights Action, June 22, 2023 ([link removed]) ) about how Guatemala’s narco-kleptocracy sector continues to annihilate "internal enemies", with Ruben Zamora being enemy number one. A day after the article was published, Ruben Zamora was sentenced to 6 years in jail.
