AG Nessel Launches Holiday Consumer Protection Campaign
*LANSING* – As families prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving and other traditions to welcome the holidays, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is launching her annual holiday consumer protection campaign focused on ways Michigan residents can protect their information and their wallets. Beginning on Black Friday and continuing until the New Year, the Attorney General Consumer Protection website's holiday scams page and social media accounts will focus on educating consumers on 24 topics, including tactics scammers use to cheat consumers out of their funds during the holidays. This year’s campaign will tie in themes from popular holiday movies to bring in new audiences and deliver the information in a more entertaining way.
“Before the holidays and the biggest spending day of the year, it’s important to be aware of scammers looking to take the joy out of the season – and take your hard-earned money or personal information,” Nessel said. “Through this campaign, residents can learn to stay vigilant and keep ahead of common scams in a fun and festive way.”
To kick off the campaign, Attorney General Nessel is sharing important information surrounding the biggest shopping and philanthropic days of the year – Black Friday [ [link removed] ], Small Business Saturday [ [link removed] ], Cyber Monday [ [link removed] ], and Giving Tuesday [ [link removed] ]. The Attorney General is also issuing a series of new alerts to keep consumers informed on scams and topics throughout the holidays, such as:
* AI Scams;
* Facebook Marketplace Scams;
* Returns;
* Porch Pirates; and
* Online Shopping
To help Michigan residents stay safe from scams, identity theft, and other deceptive schemes, Attorney General Nessel recently launched a new consumer protection social media account [ [link removed] ], Michigan Consumer Protection (@MIConsumerWatch). The new account will serve as a trusted source for scam alerts, consumer protection tips, education resources, and updates from the Department of Attorney General and will host the holiday campaign. Residents can follow @MIConsumerWatch on Facebook [ [link removed] ], Instagram [ [link removed] ], X [ [link removed] ], and LinkedIn [ [link removed] ].
The Department of Attorney General will issue press releases each Monday outlining the scams of the week, with daily posts shared through the MI Consumer Alerts social media accounts.
