You did it - thank you so much!

Dear John,

In today’s Budget, the Chancellor finally announced that the unjust two-child limit in our social security system will be removed. Rachel Reeves has acknowledged that no child should be punished just because they happen to have more than one brother or sister.

The rule has always been absurd. Can you imagine a bus driver turning away a third child, just because their brother and sister had already boarded? Or a doctor refusing to treat a third poorly child, because two was enough? Of course not, yet that’s the level of injustice that was stitched into the system in 2017, and allowed to remain for eight years.

Its removal rights a wrong, and is a win for people power. The Government hasn’t just changed its mind on a whim - it has been persuaded by the tenacious and targeted efforts by parents’ groups, churches, charities and community campaigners. You were a part of that - thank you!

This is not, of course, the only issue affecting families. There is much in the Budget and in the forthcoming Child Poverty Strategy to digest - and this must be the beginning of a national renewal of the social security system, rather than a one-off tweak.

Nonetheless, a fundamentally immoral principle has been righted, enhancing the life chances of a huge number of children. And we can all be encouraged that, when there are more injustices to name and challenge down the line, speaking truth to power is always important – and it works!

Thank you and best wishes

Liam Purcell
