We’ve barely returned from the longest government shutdown in history — and already, I’m working to prevent the next one.

The truth is, the budget “deal” passed earlier this month only keeps the government funded through the end of January. Without real action, we could find ourselves right back where we were: families hurting, federal workers missing paychecks, and vital services at risk.

That’s why I’m calling on Congressional leaders to sit down now and negotiate responsible, long-term budget bills that actually work for the American people — smart bills that:

• Invest in new priorities
• Cut what we no longer need
• Direct resources where they’re needed most

Passing a full budget is one of the most basic responsibilities of Congress. Americans deserve better than a series of short-term patches. It’s time to end these band-aid budgets and deliver the stability and certainty that families and businesses deserve.
