john,

President Trump just told Congress not to "waste" its time extending the enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies that millions of families rely on to afford their health insurance premiums.

According to him, these subsidies would "only enrich insurance companies," but that's not how it works. These subsidies are what make health coverage affordable for everyday Americans. Without them, premiums could more than double for millions of Americans. And even those who don’t buy their insurance on the ACA marketplace will see their rates go up. I know mine have.

Let me explain. When health insurance premiums become unaffordable, young, healthy people stop buying insurance and “roll the dice,” hoping they won’t have a medical crisis this year. Sicker and older people continue to buy health insurance if they can afford it. That means the “risk pool” gets sicker, insurance companies know they will have to pay out more per person on average, and so they charge us all more. I’m no apologist for insurance companies, but that is the reality.

And who would suffer? Families nationwide, including countless here in Washington State. If you're ready to fire Trump's GOP yes-men and elect real, for-the-people leaders to Congress, chip in anything you can before our crucial end-of-month fundraising deadline. >> [link removed]

I ran for Congress to fight for you and make your lives easier, which includes access to affordable health insurance. Democrats brought down the cost of insulin. Democrats gave Medicare the power to negotiate drug costs. Now Democrats are offering up commonsense solutions to keep costs down, but Republicans won’t even sit down at the table with us. When these subsidies expire, it's on them. And frankly, letting subsidies run out is reckless and harms the people we all represent. People will get sicker and poorer.

We need leadership that actually fights for the people they took an oath to protect, not Donald Trump. The first step is to take back our blue House majority. Before our end-of-month deadline, can I count on you to chip in $5, or anything you can, to help me hold the GOP accountable and defend affordable healthcare for every American? >> [link removed]

Thank you,

Kim
