As we gather and celebrate with loved ones this week, let us give thanks for all of our many blessings — including our family and our freedoms. Additionally, let us remember the selfless men and women who are away from home this holiday season as they defend our nation and protect our unalienable rights.

As you may know, six Democrat Members of Congress recently released a video urging service members and intelligence officials to “refuse illegal orders.” There is no evidence President Trump, Secretary of War Hegseth, or any Commanders have issued such orders. In fact, one of the lawmakers, Senator Slotkin, admitted she is “not aware” of President Trump issuing any illegal orders.

Folks, as a 28-year Navy combat veteran, I’m deeply disturbed by this despicable stunt. In my entire military career, I have never, ever been given an illegal order or even made aware of any illegal order. In officer school, every officer is taught what illegal orders are and what they are not, and I have never seen one. This message by the Democrats is a poorly disguised attempt to subvert discipline and cohesion within the military.

It is reckless and downright dangerous to encourage our warfighters to ignore orders from their Commanders — especially our Commander-in-Chief. The Democrat lawmakers who falsely claimed that the Trump Administration is issuing illegal orders are attempting to sow unnecessary doubt and confusion — distractions that threaten to put our service members in harm’s way. In response, my fellow House Republican veterans and I are urging troops to stand strong for law, order, and the U.S. Constitution.

For years, the D.C. City Council’s Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Emergency Amendment Act has prevented our men and women in blue from effectively protecting Americans in our nation’s capital, hindered the Metropolitan Police Department’s ability to recruit and retain officers, and exacerbated Washington’s crime crisis. In 2023, then-Senator JD Vance and I introduced legislation to block this anti-police law. While our measure passed both the House and Senate with bipartisan support, President Biden vetoed it — showcasing just how little he cared about the American people’s safety in our nation’s capital.

Thankfully, we have another opportunity to overturn the D.C. Council’s severely misguided law. Yet this time, it’s under a President who is committed to restoring law and order across the country. 

Last week, my Commonsense Law Enforcement and Accountability Now (CLEAN) in D.C. Act, which repeals the Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Emergency Amendment Act, passed the House with bipartisan support. In fact, more House Democrats voted for my effort this time around, signaling an optimistic outcome in the Senate. I look forward to advancing the CLEAN D.C. Act through the Senate and to President Trump’s desk for his signature so we can continue delivering on our shared goal of Making D.C. Safe Again! After all, you and your family deserve to feel safe in our nation’s capital.

I’d like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to two outstanding seniors at North Hall High School. This fall, Cohen Echols and Emma Clark were chosen by their classmates to be crowned this year’s Homecoming King and Queen. The precious moment honoring Emma, a cheerleader, and Cohan, the football team manager, filled the entire school and community with pride. The two students with Down Syndrome are known throughout North Hall High School for their positivity, kindness, and the joy they bring to those around them. The heart-warming event showcases the school’s supportive culture and the student body’s strong character.
