FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 25, 2025 Contact: Karma Lombard (207) 624-8540 Maine Bureau of Insurance Urges Consumers to Beware of Unlicensed Health Insurance Marketers The Maine Bureau of Insurance (Bureau) has learned that Maine consumers searching for health insurance online are being contacted by salespersons offering to enroll them in coverage through LifeX Research Corporation. Consumers are being told they will be covered by LifeX’s health plan by becoming LifeX employees. Any health plan being offered by LifeX is not a major medical health insurance plan regulated by the Bureau. Some Maine consumers have been told the LifeX health plan will be issued by a well-known health insurer. This is not true. None of the licensed health insurers offering major medical coverage in the State of Maine provide coverage to Maine consumers through LifeX. Maine consumers have also received information about other entities in connection with LifeX plans, including Benefit Health Plan, Inc. or “BHPI” and Benefit Logistics Captive Insurance Company. These entities are not licensed to engage in the business of insurance in Maine. Unfortunately, during open enrollment for Affordable Care Act coverage, there is often an increase in unlicensed entities attempting to sell unapproved products to consumers. As a reminder, if you are contacted by phone after searching for health insurance online, do not give out any personal or financial information until you confirm you are dealing with licensed individuals selling products from insurance companies licensed by the Bureau. Some red flags to watch for during sales calls are:
If you are questioning information provided to you over the phone or concerned about a website found during an online search, you can call the Bureau at 207-624-8475 / TTY: 711 / 800-300-5000 (toll free) or email the Bureau at [email protected]. You are encouraged to contact the Bureau prior to making any purchase. Make sure to write down any web addresses, phone numbers, names, and license information. Bureau staff will be able to verify whether you are working with licensed individuals or companies selling approved health insurance plans. You can also always confirm whether a company or agent is licensed in Maine on the Bureau’s website at https://www.maine.gov/pfr/insurance/licensee-search. If you are searching for major medical or dental insurance under the Affordable Care Act, you should go to CoverME.gov, Maine’s health insurance marketplace, which offers health plans that have been reviewed and approved by the Bureau and is the only place Maine residents can get financial savings that lower monthly premiums. Consumers can also call CoverME.gov’s Consumer Assistance Center at 1-866-636-0355; TTY: 711 from Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. (Hours are extended past 5 p.m. until ACA Open Enrollment ends on January 15, 2026.)
