Dear friends,

To win as a Democrat today, it is not enough to be a liberal. No, you have to be a socialist.

The political landscape has shifted so far to the radical left that moderate voices, the kind that Mississippi Democrats pretend to align themselves with, are increasingly irrelevant, if not openly shut down. Name me one national Democrat who is pro-life—you can’t because they do not exist anymore.

There is no such thing as someone who advocates for practical governance, compromise, or fiscal restraint. Instead, candidates must embrace sweeping government programs, open borders, and the latest progressive orthodoxy.

Take the recent resolution on Capitol Hill condemning socialism. While every (voting) Republican voted for it, a majority of Democrats actually voted against it. Amazingly, just 85 of the 214 Democrats in the U.S. House were able to agree with this message.

This Democrat Party is no longer the party of my Baptist-deacon, union-member grandfather; it is no longer the Democrat Party of President John Kennedy—“Ask not what your country can give to you. Ask what you can do for your country.” Today’s Democrats have flipped those once shared values 180 degrees.

The recent New York City mayor’s race illustrates this shift clearly. Candidates who positioned themselves closer to the center struggled to gain traction, while the Ugandan born recent 2018 U.S. citizen candidate who leaned hard into socialist policies captured the attention of the party’s base. This is not an isolated case; it reflects a broader trend across the country, at least in blue cities, states, and inside the Democrat Party: they have abandoned the center and any attempt to compromise with Republicans entirely.

You must believe government can and should do everything for everyone, even illegal immigrants: "We will prove that there is no problem too large for government to solve, and no concern too small for it to care about.” The NYC Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, pledges on January 1st, that he “will usher in a city government that helps everyone." His message was, to quote President Ronald Reagan, “I'm from the government, and I'm here to help.” Though Reagan, and previous generations, called those “[t]he nine most terrifying words in the English language.”

You must now believe taxes should be as high as possible in order to redistribute wealth, buses should be free, rent should be fixed, and groceries stores must be owned and run by the government. In order to “care for migrants from third world countries,” we must have open borders no matter even if they hate our culture and ideas, no matter if they refuse to assimilate—and we must give them free food, housing, education, healthcare and more. And, in the name of “fairness,” men must be able to play women’s sports. You must believe biology is optional, and feelings are law.

Even more concerning is the growing tolerance among many Democrats for political violence. Surveys now show a disturbing number of Democratic voters believe violence against political opponents can be justified in certain situations, simply for a difference of opinion. Combined with a Democrat platform that rewards ideological extremism, this creates a political culture where violent aggression is normalized, and working across the aisle in good faith is punished. They killed Charlie Kirk because he shared the gospel of Christ and shared truth in the public square. They’ve attempted two assignation attempts on President Donald Trump, and they have burned down and pillaged some of our greatest cities.

From ambitious socialist agendas to the acceptance of violent confrontational tactics, the Democratic Party is moving in a direction that leaves little room for anyone who still believes in common sense and our basic American values, values that until recent years united us as a country, Republican, Democrat, and Independent. If you want to win a primary as a Democrat today, that is the only direction you can run.

The next time a Democrat says they are a moderate, or a “Mississippi Democrat,” laugh, and remind them that if you want to be a Democrat, you have to be a socialist. That’s the price of admission. If you want to be a conservative, you have to be a Republican.
