After the mass shooting attack at the Tree of Life congregation’s synagogue, local leaders in Pittsburgh tried to protect residents by banning assault weapons and large-capacity magazines within city limits.
Despite overwhelming public support for the effort, the local government was blocked from taking action to save lives, all because of an archaic state law from the ’70s.
In Pennsylvania, we have a law on the books that makes it harder than it should be for mayors, sheriffs, city councils, and other local leaders to keep their constituents safe and alive. Together, we’re working to change that.
Please take 30 seconds to tell your representative to co-sponsor the bill that would give local governments back the power to pass gun laws and save lives. [[link removed]]

Pennsylvania House Rep. Dan Frankel, who represents the Squirrel Hill community where Tree of Life is located, is planning to introduce an Empowering Local Governments to Protect Their Residents bill. The more co-sponsors a bill has, the more likely it is to gain enough legislative support to become law. That’s why it’s so crucial that your representative hears from constituents like you.
Right now, the gun lobby is pushing a bill that would make preemption even worse by forcing taxpayers to pay for NRA-backed lawsuits against local laws that address the flood of ghost guns, machine gun conversion devices, and gun stores in residential communities when all local officials are trying to do is save lives. We have to fight back.
Across the commonwealth, law enforcement officers, health care professionals, faith leaders, and Pennsylvania families are sick and tired of the gun violence epidemic. We have momentum and we’re WINNING at the local level.
It’s time for the State Assembly to stop standing in the way of lifesaving progress.
In community,

P.S. Getting rid of this preemption law from a time before mass shootings were a daily occurrence is one of the most important things we can do to save lives in PA. Please add your voice and tell your representative to co-sponsor Rep. Frankel’s bill. [[link removed]]
