There was a major development today, and it cuts straight to the heart of
Trump’s growing abuse of power.

A federal judge just dismissed the indictments against former FBI Director
James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James after finding that
the prosecutor who brought the cases – a Trump-installed loyalist with no
prior experience – was illegally appointed. The judge called the
indictments “unlawful exercises of executive power.”^[ [link removed] ]

This confirms what so many of us have been warning: Trump has been
pressuring his Justice Department to go after people he sees as political
enemies. These cases were built on that obsession, not on evidence, and
today’s ruling exposed just how far his administration is willing to
stretch the law to make those cases happen.

And this moment is only one piece of a much larger struggle. Trump keeps
pressuring the DOJ to pursue his critics and political rivals, and these
dismissals are already expected to move into appeals. The escalation is
unmistakable, and it threatens the basic expectation that federal law
enforcement must answer to the public, not the president’s pursuit of
personal grudges.
