Last week, we had some good news – because of public pressure from Food & Water Watch members and allies, Congress nixed a proposal to pass a law that would prevent state and local rules and protections on AI and data centers. Still, Republicans in Congress are working overtime to strip away any laws that may stand in the way of a completely unregulated data center and AI frenzy — efforts that would have real consequences. Senator Cruz, for example, is pushing the SANDBOX Act, which would let AI companies evade regulation for up to 10 years. This bill would be a disaster for communities, and Cruz is attempting to attach it to must-pass legislation. These dangerous provisions would effectively override local authorities and regulations that protect people living near data centers. Take action now by urging your members of Congress to OPPOSE exemptions to local regulations on AI data center expansion.

This unchecked AI expansion — powered by fossil fuels — would increase pollution and make energy less affordable for American families while funneling taxpayer dollars to Big Tech and fossil fuel interests. By 2030, data center growth could: Add over 10,800 MW of fossil fuel capacity Cause 1,300 premature deaths each year Cost $20 billion in health impacts Eliminate thousands of good paying jobs
Big Tech doesn’t need more handouts – it needs accountability. Urge Congress: Stop the Trump administration from sacrificing communities for AI expansion. Onward together,
