Dear Friend,
I wanted to provide an update on the work I am doing in the House of Representatives to represent the great people of Maryland's First Congressional District and to advance commonsense, conservative legislation in Washington, D.C.
Standing Up for Law Enforcement in Our Nation’s Capital
Earlier last week in Washington, I voted in strong support of the CLEAN D.C. Act, overturning the D.C. Council’s 2022 police reform measure. The Council’s policy limited when officers could step in during dangerous situations, banned several standard policing tactics, expanded the risk of disciplinary action for split-second decisions, and made it harder for the Metropolitan Police Department to hire and keep officers. By repealing it, the CLEAN D.C. Act restores the tools and protections officers previously relied on, removes restrictions that slowed everyday policing, and helps D.C. rebuild a stronger, more effective police force at a time when public safety is urgently needed.
Reforming D.C.’s Broken Bail System
In a week focused on public safety, The House passed the District of Columbia Cash Bail Reform Act which ends cashless bail in Washington, D.C. by requiring cash bail for offenses that threaten public safety and blocking automatic releases for violent or repeat offenders. The bill overturns D.C.’s current system that gives judges broad discretion to let individuals charged with violent crimes walk free while awaiting trial. Under this bill, those accused of violent offenses must remain in custody, and anyone charged with public safety or public order crimes must post bail before release, closing the loopholes that have allowed dangerous offenders to return to the community before trial.
Protecting Taxpayers from Biden’s Abortion Travel Policy
Recently, I co-sponsored the No Taxpayer-Funded Abortion Travel for Illegal Aliens Act to stop the Biden Administration from using taxpayer money to arrange and pay for abortion travel for illegal alien minors in the Office of Refugee Resettlement custody after entering the U.S. illegally. Under Biden, the ORR was directed to use federal funds to cover travel, lodging, and other arrangements to take these minors to states where abortions were allowed. This bill ends that misuse of taxpayer money by banning federal agencies from paying for or coordinating abortion-related travel for anyone here illegally. It also prevents any future administration from reinstating Biden’s policy.
