I wear this starfish because I say it’s my line of work. Public service is the parable of the starfish. There’s a little boy on a beach, and a very high tide has washed up thousands of starfish. So he begins to throw them back into the ocean, one by one. Then an older, wiser man comes up to the boy and asks what he’s doing. The boy tells him, “I’m saving starfish. They’re going to dry up, they’re going to die!” The older man shakes his head and says, “Oh little boy, there are too many. Don’t you see – you can’t possibly make a difference.” In response, the little boy picks up a starfish, throws it back into the ocean, and says, “I made a difference for that one.” That is how I view my work in Congress. Like you, I’m making a difference one by one. If I can make a small difference for one person at a time, it makes it worth it. Under this President we’re facing overwhelming challenges. Every day brings something new and deeply troubling. But we keep going — because real leadership isn’t about flashy headlines or sweeping promises. It’s about showing up, listening, solving problems, and standing up for the people who don’t have a lobbyist or a megaphone. It’s about making a difference for someone — again and again. That’s why I will always fight for the good people of Pennsylvania that I was sent to Washington to represent.
