Davids

Hello from the State Capitol,

Next session, I plan to chief-author legislation that prohibits automated speed cameras from capturing the image of a speeding vehicle and issuing a citation to its owner.

Automated speed cameras are a way to justify hiring fewer law enforcement officers while raising revenue for the city through speeding tickets. It’s basically an excuse to institute a regressive tax on Minnesotans while violating their civil liberties.

Minnesota currently has a Traffic Safety Camea System pilot program taking place in Minneapolis and Mendota Heights. The camera system can be used to issue citations for speed violations, red light violations, or both. The program runs through July 31, 2029.

My bill would eliminate the program altogether and prevent future expansion of automated speed cameras. It should be noted that this legislation would not eliminate speed cameras installed in highway work zones, where warnings are issued for identified violations.

The City of Rochester narrowly approved a motion to ask the Minnesota Legislature’s permission to install automated speed enforcement cameras in the city, which I believe is unnecessary overreach.

Residents aren’t beating down the doors of city council members demanding the city videotape their driving habits. If their true priority is road safety, then prioritize officer-based enforcement without automated surveillance.

Thanksgiving

It's hard to believe, but Thanksgiving Day is almost here. I wish all of you a very safe, happy, and healthy holiday, and hope you will be able to enjoy plenty of time with your friends and loved ones.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Greg
