Friend,

This is one of the most shameless things we’ve seen from Republicans in
the Senate in a long time – and that’s saying a lot.

Republican leaders quietly inserted a provision into the government
funding bill that gives senators the right to personally sue the United
States for “damages” if their phone records were obtained during the
January 6 investigation. We’re talking $500,000 or more – straight from
taxpayers – into the pockets of individual senators.

And here’s the kicker: the House unanimously voted to repeal it. Four
hundred twenty-six to zero.

But Senate Republicans? They’re digging in.

Sen. Ted Cruz publicly praised Senate Majority Leader John Thune for
slipping this payout into the funding package. Sen. Lindsey Graham is
bragging that he’s going to sue the Biden administration, former special
counsel Jack Smith, and even Verizon – saying he wants to make it “so
painful” for everyone involved that he’ll walk away with far more than
$500,000.

While millions of families are struggling to pay rent and buy groceries,
these Republican senators are trying to hand themselves a taxpayer-funded
windfall because they didn’t like that investigators examined their phone
records during an inquiry into the attack on our democracy.

That is outrageous. And the Senate needs to hear it from every corner of
the country.

now. >>

When nearly every member of the House – Democrat and Republican – agrees
something is unacceptable, the Senate has no excuse. And their attempts to
spin this are insulting. Thune is now claiming the measure “protects both
parties” and that it’s not about profit. But the bill he negotiated behind
closed doors literally writes senators a check.

Even Republican senators not targeted in the January 6 investigation are
furious. They weren’t told about the provision. They didn’t vote for it
knowingly. And they know how toxic this looks to voters.

This is exactly why the Senate is trying to slow-walk the repeal. They’re
hoping the public outrage fades.

We cannot let that happen.

This payout scheme never should have been drafted, let alone passed. It’s
a direct attempt to turn public money into a personal compensation fund
for senators caught up in a legitimate investigation.

Let’s shut it down.
